5 Things Feminism Has Done For Me

Crosspost from my blog, World of Finches.

Via Amanda. I am blogging in solidarity with Canadian feminists, who are currently protesting the Conservative government's cuts to the Status of Women's Canda (SWC) program. More information is available at this site.

1. I can vote. Too obvious? Tell that to the women of Kuwait.

2. When I was a teenager, I came up with a pregnancy contingency plan for myself. I still have it written down somewhere. This plan included things like "buy a home pregnancy test" at a drugstore, "get a blood test to confirm" from Planned Parenthood, and, if necessary, "have an abortion." My biggest concerns were making sure that I had the money and keeping it secret from my mom and my abusive boyfriend. Scared shitless as I was, it was comforting to have a plan. This was all full of a privilege, centered on the legality of and access to a safe and legal abortion, not to mention contraception, that I think I took completely for granted back then.

3. At my bat mitzvah, I read Torah. Growing up, it never even occurred to me to question whether or not women should be allowed to read from Torah, sit together with men in the synagogue, be counted in minyan, or become rabbis.

4. When I needed one, there was a rape crisis hotline (not unlike this one) for me to call.

5. I have a great job, and I am getting paid what I am worth. I have intra-company and legal recourse if I experience harassment or discrimination.

What are five things that feminism has done for you?
